The
Wheeling Nailers have had their way at Sun National Bank Center for
most of the season, after winning each of the first four games they
played there. On Sunday afternoon, the home standing Titans took a game
back, as Matt Schepke's third period goal was Wheeling's lone tally
in a 5-1 victory for Trenton.
After a scoreless first ten minutes of the contest,
the Titans' offense came alive, scoring three goals in a span of 6:41
in the latter stages of the first period. Matt Germain opened the scoring
at the 12:20 mark, taking a pass from Andy Bohmbach, and drilling a
slap shot into the top part of the goal. A little less than four minutes
later, Dustin Cameron capitalized on a Wheeling turnover, by proceeding
to score with a shot from the left circle. The final goal in the frame
went to Ryan Hayes, who cut to the middle and slipped a backhander into
the cage, while Trenton was playing on the power play.
In the second period, the Nailers nearly got
on the scoreboard, as Ben Farrer and Peter Lenes combined for a scoring
chance in the offensive zone. Unfortunately, Brad Phillips made the
save, and the Titans got a 4-on-2 rush the other way. Andy Bohmbach
and Rob Bordson led the way, as Trenton ultimately found Tyler Hostetter,
who scored with a wrist shot on the right side of the ice.
Wheeling found the back of the net in the third
period, when at the 3:16 mark, Matt Schepke beat his defender, and lifted
a shot over Brad Phillips' left shoulder. The Titans were able to regain
their four-goal edge later in the game, when Ryan Hayes picked up his
second goal of the contest, with both tallies coming on the man advantage.
Brad Phillips picked up the win for Trenton,
making 15 saves on 16 shots. Patrick Killeen took the loss for Wheeling,
stopping 15 of 20 shots.
The Nailers' next game takes place on Friday
night at 7:00, when they travel to Huntington Center to face the Toledo
Walleye.
