CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -
Several dozen West Virginia public employees are spending their day off rallying for better pay and conditions.
The workers marked the Presidents' Day holiday at the state Capitol by calling on lawmakers to improve their situations.
The employees support merit pay increases. They oppose moves toward privatizing programs or services now handled by public employees.
Workers are particularly critical of staffing levels and conditions at the state's mental health hospitals. The facilities in Huntington and Weston have been the subject of lawsuits and court monitoring orders.
The West Virginia Public Workers Union organized Monday's rally. The state doesn't allow collective bargaining for any of its employees. The group is also protesting attacks on such rights in other states.
