CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -
Legislature in the Mountain State wants to be specific as to who can and cannot run for an elected office.
On Monday, a bill was passed in Senate that would make anyone convicted of certain felonies, like treason or bribery, ineligible to run for state or local office unless the conviction was expunged, pardoned or overturned.
The bill would also require a current office holder to step down once convicted and all appeals are complete.
Sen. Corey Palumbo says a 1933 state Supreme Court decision found the existing law vague, and the bill would address that.
The Kanawha County Democrat argues that the law already bars convicted felons from holding public office and he believes a modern court would uphold the existing statute.
The bill now goes to the House of Delegates for consideration.
