Weirton Madonna senior Drazen Frankovitch has been selected as the WTRF, Wheeling Hospital Athlete of the Week.
Frankovitch scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, helping the Blue Dons win back-to-back OVAC Class A championships at Ohio University Eastern.
The Blue Dons pulled away for an 84-64 win over Beallsville, avenging a regular-season loss to the Blue Devils. Frankovitch scored a pair of buckets in the middle of a 16-0 Madonna run that iced the game. The 6-6 pivot threw down a "soft" two-handed dunk, set up by a great bounce pass from point guard Nick Battista.
"Yeah, it was soft, but I just wanted to make sure I scored the basket," said Frankovitch. "I didn't want to ruin the great pass from Nick(Battista)."
Head Coach George Vargo praised his big man.
"Drazen really hit the boards well in that game," said Vargo. "His rebounding led to a bunch of second-chance points and easy baskets for him and his teammates."
Frankovitch was one of five Blue Dons who scored in double figures. Sophomore guard Ross Comis scored 21 points, senior Clay Rokisky added 14, Battista chipped in with 13, and senior Daniel Pietranton contributed 11 points off the bench.
The Blue Dons (18-3) will start sectional play next Tuesday in Weirton, against the winner between Wheeling Central-Valley(Wetzel).
