Mayor Andy McKenzie announced large projects and new initiatives.

And he recognized people for excelling in their contributions to the community.

He said Wheeling will be getting a $35 million state of the art water plant.

The Wheeling Suspension Bridge will get a $600,000 restoration.

And the empty and deteriorating buildings in the 1100 block of Main and Market streets will make way for clean, open space.

The mayor announced the formation of a group to research Wheeling's historic structures and see what must be saved.

"There have been historic preservation efforts by several groups over the years," says McKenzie. "But there's never been a true effort by the city and also individuals to come together to find the buildings, to find out why they're historical, work with the city and the private landowners who may own them or potential new owners who may want to own them, and then find funding and work with them to preserve them."

He said city officials have had conversations with the gas and oil industry.

McKenzie says we must seize opportunity and generate jobs, while also protecting the environment and the infrastructure.
