STEUBENVILLE -
It only took about three seconds to wipe away the Fort Steuben bridge from the Ohio Valley skyline. It happened early Tuesday morning and ODOT says it went off without a hitch.
An intense blast took down the bridge, sending it into the Ohio River. Shortly after 7:15 a.m. Tuesday, crews immediately began cleaning up the debris.
The pier that once held the bridge will now serve as an observation deck. Steubenville Mayor Domenick Mucci said, "Some of the preliminary work (on the pier) will be done this year, but the observation deck won't be done until 2013."
7 News has learned the total cost of the observation deck will be $250,000 dollars. As for the rest of the project, we're told crews will continue to sweep the Ohio River to remove large chunks of the bridge and the coast guard will do a final sweep before they open it sometime Wednesday.
Count on 7 News to bring you the latest on this project as soon as it becomes available to us.
