Ohio Schools Join to Fight AEP Rate Increase

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -

Some of Ohio's largest school groups are teaming up to fight a sudden hike in their bills from American Electric Power.

The three groups are asking Ohio's utility regulators for special consideration for school districts at a time of budget cuts and bad economy.

The Ohio School Boards Association, the Ohio Association of School Business Officials and the Buckeye Association of School Administrators raised their concerns in a letter to the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio Tuesday.

They join Ohio governments and small businesses that have also complained about the increase.

The PUCO plans a hearing on the concerns Thursday and expects to take action.

AEP says the changes are part of a move toward more competition among power providers.
