Jesuit Goes 1-1 On Day Two Of The Rebel Games

Posted: Updated:

Wheeling Jesuit Softball finished the second day of the Rebel Games with a 1-1 record, posting a 6-0 victory over Fayetteville State and experiencing a 5-2 set back to Ferris State.

In game one, the Cards were led by a spectacular two-hit shutout pitching performance by Sydney Mencke.

"Mencke was able to keep their batters off balance all day and the few times they did hit the ball hard our defense stepped up" said Head Coach Jim Walker.

Offensively, Mencke was 2-for-4 from the plate with a run scored, while Kelsey Pacholke pounded out two hits. Alecia Sunagel added the big blow of the game when she blasted a two-run homerun over the left centerfield fence.

In game two, the Cardinals fell behind 5-0 on four unearned runs in the second inning followed by an earned run in the third. Brittany Hinz received the loss after a stellar six-inning performance, allowing one earned run and striking out three batters.

Offensively, Heather Helfinstine collected two hits and scored a run.

"Game two was very frustrating, we had ourselves in a position to score more runs but could never get a key hit," said Walker. "The best part of today was to see how hard this team play, we battle right to the last out," Walker added.

With the split, the Cardinals move to 4-2 overall and will continue play on Tuesday, March 6 at 9 a.m. against Belmont Abbey and 11 a.m. against the Sciences of Philadelphia.
