Wellsville High School Investigates Bullying After Teen Attempts Suicide

Posted: Updated:

Wellsville High School Principal Linda Rolley said she is investigating allegations that an openly gay student was bullied on campus.

Rolley said that students came forward Thursday after learning that Austin Rodriguez tried to kill himself by overdosing on prescription drugs he was taking.

Friends say that Rodriguez was bullied at school because he identified himself as gay.   Four Wellsville area ministers met with nearly half of the student body Thursday to help them deal with the issue.

Students claimed that school officials weren't doing enough.  "We have a strict policy in place to deal with these matters." said Rolley.   "The students have come to me with their concerns and we are doing everything we can to address those concerns." Rolley concluded.

Rodriguez is reportedly in Akron Children's Hospital in a drug induced coma after ingesting the medication.

"I wouldn't want to see one of my friends being bullied and me not have anything to say about it." said student Francesca Colella.

Brandon Russell is an area youth pastor and he told the student assembly to start making changes today.  " Let's move forward to make sure this never happens again." said Russell.

When asked if the high school has a gay-straight alliance, Principal Rolley said no.  "But it is something we would be open to and we may consider." she replied.
