Franciscan University of Steubenville is taking a strong stand on President Barack Obama's healthcare policy.
Below is the letter the university sent out to student's on May 16.
UPDATE: Student Health Insurance Coverage
You may have heard national and local news reports that Franciscan University of Steubenville will no longer offer a health insurance plan to students, effective August 15, 2012. This basic healthcare insurance policy had been offered for many years as an option to a minority of students who were not covered by their parents' plan or other health insurance coverage.
The University also dropped the policy that required all full-time undergraduate students to carry health insurance. These actions, communicated to parents and students beginning in mid-April, were taken because of two moves by the federal government:
1) The Obama Administration's mandate that all health insurance plans must cover "women's health services" including contraception, sterilization, and abortion-causing medications as part of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), and;
2) A PPACA mandated increase in maximum coverage amount for student policies that doubled the premium costs our students would pay for their policies in fall 2012. The maximum coverage amounts will increase again in 2013 and 2014 and we anticipate that premium rates will only escalate higher.
Please be assured, we are doing everything in our power to protest the ill effects of these federal regulations and we hope and pray they will be reversed. The response to the Admissions Office from parents to the policy change has been overwhelmingly positive. As has been previously communicated, the employee health insurance plan is not affected by these changes in student health insurance.
