"A tragic accident."

That's how officials are describing the drowning death of a teenage boy at Piedmont Lake Monday.

Belmont County Sheriff Fred Thompson says 16-year-old Trent Carpenter of Bethesda had been staying with relatives who have a cabin at the lake in the Reynolds Road area.

Sheriff Thompson says Carpenter was swimming with several other boys.

He says he jumped into the lake Monday morning, swam out to a rock, jumped back into the lake from the rock and never surfaced again.

Among the searchers were the Belmont County Sheriff's Department and their dive team, the Barnesville Fire Department, the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District, the Guernsey County Dive Team, the Ohio Division of Watercraft and park rangers.

They say his body was discovered at approximately 3:45 p.m.
