Kroger Dims Lights to Help Conserve Energy

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS,Ohio -

Kroger supermarkets have announce that their stores are reducing lighting by 1/3 for the next few days, to help reduce energy consumption.

"Crews are still working hard to restore power to those who lost it last Friday," said Matt Hobart, Facility Engineering Manager for Kroger's Columbus Division. "This is the least we can do to help conserve energy, and reduce the strain on the system."

Kroger normally brings down lighting by 1/3 in stores from 10 p.m. until 6 a.m. year-round, but has voluntarily extended that decrease to 24 hours a day through this Sunday.

If necessary, the company will work closely with power companies to extend the cutback.

"The stores will still be safe, and there's plenty of lighting for shoppers to make their way through the store. This just reduces the energy burden on the system while crews work to turn the lights back on around Ohio," said Hobart.

Signs have been placed in all 125 stores in the Columbus Division alerting customers to the temporary change.
