Crews Continue Cleaning After Smithfield Fire

Posted: Updated:
Smithfield, Ohio -

Crews are still clearing debris from a fire that ripped through two homes early Friday morning in Smithfield.

Authorities say the fire broke out at about midnight at two vacant homes along High Street. As of 4 p.m. areas of the home were still smoking.

Nearby neighbors spotted the flames and called 911.

Dawn Kujawa said she was concerned for her own home.

"There was fire flying that kept falling down around the house. That was a concern," she said. "The wind kept shifting and they had it under control and I wasn't too concerned after that."

We're told by the fire chief who didn't want to go on camera that there was no electricity hooked up to either house.

Fire fighters remain on call to return to the scene as they have already had to do a number of times after hot spots re-ignite. The state fire marshal has been called in to investigate.
