Beckley, W.Va. (AP) -

Fire departments across the state of West Virginia are being encouraged to apply for federal grants to help recruit and retain firefighters.

According to the Associated Press, U.S. Rep. Nick Rahall said Monday that the Federal Emergency Management Agency is accepting applications for funding through its Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response grant program.

The program provides grants to help local fire departments with staffing and deployment capabilities in order to respond to emergencies.

It is administered by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency, in cooperation with the U.S. Fire Administration.
