RG Steel Sells The Steubenville Plant

Posted: Updated:

Documents uncovered in the Jefferson County Recorders office show that RG Steel has sold it's Steubenville Plant.

While rumors suggested the property may sell for upwards of $15 million, documents show that it sold for far less at $4.3 million.

The 100 acres, much of which sits along Route 7 upon entering Steubenville was sold to River Rail Development, LLC.   Documents discovered in the Ohio State Auditors Office trace that company back to Carter Strauss, owner of Strauss Industries.   Strauss has plants in both Wheeling and Weirton.

Sources close to the sale said the new company plans to scrap most of the buildings on the property.

Jefferson County profited $17,200 in tax revenue from the sale.   The documents show that the land value was worth $523,580.  The building value totaled just over $1 million.

WTRF.com has learned that the sale did not include the mineral rights underneath of the property.

The news comes the same day that a federal bankruptcy judge approved a multi  million-dollar bonus package for 10 RG Steel executives.

"I consider that action a slap in the face not only to the workers and their families, but everyone in the Ohio Valley." said State Senator Lou Gentile.
