BELLEFONTE, Pa. -

Penn State has announced the statue of famed coach Joe Paterno will come down from outside Beaver Stadium.

According to The Associated Press and other news outlets, crews have removed the 900 pound statue and placed it inside the stadium for the time being..

A chain-link fence now surrounds the site and two- dump trucks, a flatbed truck and a forklift were among the construction vehicles used. AP says about 20 construction workers and about 20 police officers were on scene early Sunday morning.

Tensions over the fate of the statue rose after the release of former FBI Director Louis Freeh's report. The report alleged a cover-up by Paterno and other officials at the university that permitted former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky to perform sexual acts with young boys.
