One person is dead and another injured Sunday after a car overturned into a pond, submerging the vehicle under water in Belmont County.
According to Ohio State Highway Patrol, 43-year-old Brian Parks of McMechen, W.Va., crashed his vehicle on U.S. Route 40 near milepost 7, west of Morristown, Ohio.
Troopers arrived to the scene at about 12:20 a.m. where they discovered Parks trapped and unresponsive inside his car, which was upside down and completely submerged in a pond.
Officials say several troopers entered the water in order to extricate the driver. Once Parks had been brought on shore Sgt. Jason Greenwood, Trooper T.J. White and Trooper Stan Bittinger performed CPR.
Crews from Morristown, Barnesville and Bethesda Fire Departments responded to the scene and took over treatment of Parks.
Parks was later pronounced dead at the scene by the Assistant Belmont County Coroner.
The passenger, 42-year-old Sue Coulter also of McMechen, was taken to Ohio Valley Medical Center to be treated for near drowning injuries.
Alcohol is suspected to be a factor in the crash.
The incident remains under investigation.
