Moundsville Post 3 swept Wheeling Post 1, by scores of 7-6 and 5-3, to claim the Area 1 American Legion championship on Saturday at the 1-470 Chambers Complex.
Both teams have advanced to the West Virginia State Tournament, which will be played at the Chambers Complex in Wheeling next week.
Moundsville's Tanner Hanna smacked a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth scoring John Mirandy to take game one.
In game two, Mirandy, Jake Lucas, Todd Schmitt and Ryan Hughes delivered RBI hits as Post 3 built a 5-1 lead through four-and-a-half innings.
Wheeling battled back to get to within 5-3 on the strength of a Dillon Williams RBI triple, which scored Haydon Stanley, followed by a Patrick Biega RBI double,e which brought home Williams.
But that's as close as it would get.
The state tournament starts next Wednesday and continues through Saturday in Wheeling for the first time since 1988--the last time Wheeling won a state championship.
Longtime coach Bill Walters will be on hand for Wheeling's tournament-opener on Wednesday night at 7 to throw out the first pitch. All Post 1 alumni are asked to come to the game.
