Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Timeline

Wheeling-Pittsburgh steel was formed in December of 1968, when Pittsburgh Steel merged with Wheeling Steel.  

Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel files its first of three bankruptcies in 1985, 8,500 steelworkers go on strike.
The company emerged from bankruptcy in 1991.  Wheeling-Pittsburgh becomes  a subsidiary of WHX Corporation. 

The company files for bankruptcy for a second time in 2000, and emerges in 2003.  

Esmark, Inc. engaged in a successful proxy takeover battle for Wheeling-Pitt in 2005 and formally took over the steelmaker in November 2007.

In August 2008, Severstal acquired Esmark's Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel holdings for $1.25 billion.  

RG Steel, a unit of the Renco Group, acquired Wheeling-Pittsburgh from Severstal in 2011.  

RG Steel filed Chapter 11 Bankruptcy on May 31, with auctions beginning earlier this week.
