WHEELING -

The Depot Bikery held a 'soft opening' Thursday at Heritage Port along the bike trail in Wheeling.

The waterfront eatery still has to pass through city council one last time at its Tuesday meeting.

The Bikery is the brainchild of Bob 'Scat' Scatterday, who's been working on getting it up and running for months.

Frank Warren, owner of The Soup Shack in Centre Market, signed on as a vendor for the project.

"We have lunch once a week somewhere in town and we decided to come here today to support him in his new endeavor," said Barb Heyer, one of Warren's first customers at the Depot Bikery. "I'm hoping he'll be here for a while."

Warren served up a few of his Soup Shack favorites to eager customers. A limited menu of spinach salads, hummus tacos and fruit soup was offered for a few hours during lunch time.

With seating for 30 under shaded tables, the Depot Bikery offers a unique atmosphere for the area.

"The food is fantastic, all homemade, so you can't get better than that," said Wheeling City Council member Gloria Delbrugge, who played a big part in turning the Bikery into reality. "The spinach salad is out of this world."

According to Scatterday, Carenbauer Distributing pitched in and bought all the furniture from Lowes and city management has been on board every step of the way.

A grand opening is planned for late next week.
