St. Francis Xavier School in Moundsville Closing

MOUNDSVILLE -

A Moundsville Catholic school that has been open for 90 years, will not open its doors to kids this month.

Thursday evening St. Francis Xavier parish finance council recommended to permanently close the preschool and kindergarten programs because of decreasing finances.

Last year it was decided the school would stay open only for the younger kids.

According to Diocesan policy, a parish does not need the approval of the Bishop to close a preschool program.

St. Francis Xavier had been accepting students in PK 3, PK 4 and Kindergarten .

36 children who were enrolled will have to find a new school, as well as five faculty and staff who are out of work.

"We are deeply saddened when a school closes, particularly after so much hard work, prayer and resources were dedicated to rebuilding St. Francis Xavier School," said Vincent de Paul Schmidt, Supt. of Schools for the Diocese. "We have tremendous compassion for everyone being influenced by the closing of the school, particularly the families that are affected."
