A tragic event on Aug. 5 on Wheeling Island has led one local restaurant to give back to the community. Toby the dog was beaten to death by his owner's boyfriend, and has lots of people asking what they can do to join the fight against animal cruelty.
The people of the Ohio Valley came out to show their support for Toby's family on Sunday. Pets and their owners joined the Marshall County Animal Shelter at Quaker Steak and Lube at the Highlands for "Yuppie Hour" specials including puppy-tini's and mutt-garitas.
The Lube said 10 percent of each check was donated to both the Ohio County and Marshall County Animal Shelters. Organizer Stephanie Adams tells WTRF.com the event was actually the restaurant's idea.
"We heard the news and we were all upset about it," she says. "We wanted to do something to give back to the community and have Toby in memory."
The Marshall County Shelter held open adoptions on Saturday as well. Organizer Jeramiah Freeland says about ten lovable dogs were looking for homes.
"The Ohio County and Marshall County Animal Shelters are holding adoptions. Its $100 to adopt dogs. You can come up here and check out the great little dogs, it helps out a lot of people."
Also to raise money a 50/50 and a raffle were held. If you brought a donation for the shelter, you were given $5 off your bill. Organizers say they had at least $300 dollars to donate by this afternoon. All of Saturday's donations were in fond memory of Toby.
