It was an arraignment without the defendant.
Jeffrey Hart, 48, of Belmont County is facing 10 counts of the rape of a child.
Officials say the girl was 12 when the abuse began. Several months ago, Hart jumped off an overpass into oncoming traffic in a suicide attempt.
He survived, but his lawyer says he's in a Woodsfield nursing home, bedridden and immobile.
The prosecutor wanted a bit more documentation on that.
"Well looking at the allegation contained in the indictment, we have ten counts of rape of a child. So you can imagine our concern with the safety of the public with him being out there," said Belmont County Prosecutor Chris Berhalter. "Therefore we did ask for assurances that his medical condition is as it was represented here in court and the probation department is going to follow through with that."
Not guilty pleas were entered to all ten counts, on his behalf. Hart's court-appointed attorney has to present the name and address of the nursing home to the court within one day. Then court officers will go there and look at the situation.
Hart is out on $200,000 bond. He had just posted that bond and walked away from the jail when he jumped off the overpass.
