It's unfortunate news for the Catholic Diocese of Steubenville and for residents of Steubenville as word spreads that a retired bishop passed away this weekend.
The second bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Steubenville, Albert Ottenweller passed away Sunday following a brief illness. He died at the age of 96.
Bishop Ottenweller had been living in Toledo, Ohio after he retired as Bishop at the Catholic Diocese of Steubenville. He served as a priest and auxiliary in Toledo.
Bishop Jeffery Monforton said that Ottenweller pulled people together, he was a gentleman and he was known for his pastoral skills. He also put tremendous focus on social awareness of the church and how to reach out to the disadvantaged.
"Love your people. Love the people, that's what I remember. That's certainly something that we are encouraged to do but its always good to hear it from predecessor bishop who loved the people so much. He's already given a good example of how I should follow as a successor of his," says Bishop Monforton.
Monforton was able to visit Ottenweller earlier this month. He expressed his love for the people of Steubenville and the memories he shared with the Diocese. Ottenweller was unable to attend Monforton's ordination but sent his regards.
There will be services Tuesday and Wednesday in Toledo, a scripture service on Thursday and a funeral mass on Friday at the cathedral. Bishop Ottenweller will be laid to rest beside his father in his hometown.
