The Wheeling Jesuit women's golf team won the WVIAC Northern Regional Championship at Moundsville Country Club – WJU's home course. The Cardinals shot an opening round 302 and, on the final day of competition, fired a 323 for a 14-stroke advantage (625) over runner-up Concord University (639).
Concord's Stephanie Peareth earned medalist honors and a spot on the All-Tournament Team with a two-day total of 149 strokes, edging WJU's Whitney Young by just one stroke.
The Cardinal placed three individuals on the All-Tournament Team, and Young led the way with a two-day total of 150 strokes. After opening the tournament with a 76, Young cut two strokes from her score for an appearance on the All-Tournament squad. Kasey Frazier followed with rounds of 75 and 77 for a two-day total 152, while Juli Hirauk fired a opening low-round 73 followed by an 82 to finish with 155 strokes. Fairmont State University's Elizabeth Frederick was also named to the All-Tournament Team, finishing the event with 155 strokes.
In addition, the Sue Vail Leadership Award was presented to Glenville State College on behalf of Olivia Ferrell. The leadership award is selected by the league's coaches and is awarded to a player who displays outstanding qualities necessary to be a leader for their respective team.
During the 2012 season, Wheeling Jesuit has posted two tournament wins, the Mercyhurst Invitational and WVIAC Northern Regional, and has two second place finishes, the Michael Corbett Women's Golf Classic and the Clarion University Fall Invitational.
The Cardinals will travel to Findlay, Ohio on Saturday and Sunday, October 6-7 for the William Beall Fall Classic at Findlay Country Club.
