Wheeling Park Trails by Four at WV State Golf Tourney

The Wheeling Park Patriots sit in second place on the Class AAA leaderboard after day one of the West Virginia State Golf Tournament at Oglebay Park.

The University High School Hawks lead the 3-A standings with a combined score of 225, Park is at 229.

The Patriots, bidding for a three-peat, have junior Thadd Obecny II trying to win a third straight medalist title, who fired a one-over par 73.  The Jones Course has been altered a bit for the tournament, playing at a par 72.  They changed hole No.17 to a par five, instead of a par four.

Wheeling Park sophomore Cole Hand is the day one leader, after shooting an even par 72.  Patriots freshman Dylan Wojcik was disqualified for breaking a club, and senior Scotty Hand carded an 84. Wheeling Park coach Don Headley says freshman Hunter Bryan will play in Wojcik's place tomorrow.

Poca is the Class AA leader at 246, leading Roane County by three shots.

Charleston Catholic, bidding for a Class A repeat, leads Weirton Madonna by 15 shots-- 236 to 251.

Madonna's Alex Colantonio led the way with an 80, Michael Rogers shot an 82. Thomas Gianni had an 89, Nick Mazur carded a 94.

Other local players, who qualified as individuals, include Brooke High School's Logan Lojszczyk (87), Tyler Consolidated's Corey Wells (83), and Wheeling Central's Thomas Stanley (92).

The shot of the day belonged to Buffalo's Blaik Caplinger, who aced the par three, 11th hole, part of his round of 83.
