Hand Claims Medalist Title, University Upsets Wheeling Park

Posted: Updated:

Wheeling Park sophomore Cole Hand took medalist honors at the 2012 West Virginia State High School Golf Tournament at Oglebay Park's Jones Course, but his Patriots were beaten by University, ending a run at back-to-back Class AAA state titles for the Patriots.

Hand followed up his round of 72 with a 74 in the final round, for a two-day total of 146, good enough for a two-shot win over teammate Thadd Obecny II, who was the two-time defending medalist. Wheeling Park's Scotty Hand shot an 81 in the final round. Obecny, who was six over par at one point in the final round, made a birdie flourish at the end, with birdies on holes 12, 15, 17 and 18.  Obecny made two double-bogeys on holes 8 and 11. Hand made four birdies in the final round on holes 2, 5, 14 and 17. His three-putted for a bogey on 18.

In Class A, Charleston Catholic repeated as champions with a 481 two-day total. Weirton Madonna finished second at 502, 21 shots behind the Irish.

Roane County claimed the school's first ever golf state championship, rallying from a three-shot deficit to win by three strokes over Poca High School.  Roane County finished with a two-day total of 489 to claim the Class AA state championship.
