Eastern Gateway Community College Completes Shale Training

Posted: Updated:

There's no doubt the Ohio Valley has seen a big increase in jobs relating to the oil and gas industry and Eastern Gateway Community College is doing its part to help people get hired.

EGCC has just completed five three-week ShaleNET training programs for entry level jobs such as roustabout and floorhand plus many more. People who attended this program came from all different fields, were recently laid off or unemployed and looking for a career change.

The classes contain 11 to 12 different modules including safety, rigging, terminology, and most importantly resume writing. The classes ran from March to August. They had around 85 people go through the program with a 70% placement rate in March.

"The folks that have gone through our training are head and shoulders above anyone that hasn't had any experience in the field because they understand the terminology and they understand the process and what they may be looking for," says EGCC Assistant Director of Workforce Training Tracee Joltes.

Joltes says that the job market for this industry is steadily growing in our area and will continue to grow as additional companies move into the area.

Joltes says these companies want to hire locally because it costs less.

An aspect of the training program is helping people find who is hiring and how they can apply. Joltes knows that it is not an easy process to get a job but the key is tenacity and to continue to apply to the companies who are hiring. That's what Ryan DiMattio did.

"I don't know anyone who can have the kind of job and money I make without a education or college education, so I think it's well worth it," says DiMattio.

The training program prepares people for what they can expect once they are hired. It also completes all the tests so that the company does not have to, such as background and drug tests. Demattio took the course, got several interviews and landed him the dream job he worked so hard to get.

More programs like this will take place at Eastern Gateway Community College. A safety training is scheduled for October 24th to the 26th.To register email shuggans@egcc.edu.
