With not much time left before demolition is set to begin, the future is still not clear for the former Imperial Pools Building in East Wheeling
The city currently owns the building and Mayor Andy McKenzie told 7News there has been discussion about saving the building, but that it's not in great shape.
According to McKenzie, the building has been vacant for about 20 years, it doesn't have a fully intact roof and part of the first and second floors have collapsed. Right now the city wants to tear it down, but they are willing to work with a group who is interested in saving it, they just need to come up with a plan, and the money to do it.
"We continue to move along in East Wheeling, trying to revitalize it, and clearly this is a big building in that East Wheeling neighborhood," McKenzie said. "We are trying to make way and get rid of buildings that are vacant, but we're always interested in saving buildings if it's possible."
The people who are looking into saving this building are members of a task force, created by the mayor himself, to review all historical structures within the city.
However, the demolition contract has already been awarded to Edgeco.the same company who is working on the sports complex in East Wheeling, and McKenzie said they could begin work in a week or two.
