U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin is getting ahead of Election Day with a call to voters.
Goodwin issued a statement Oct. 17, a week before early voting begins in West Virginia, asking voters to contact his office with any complaints of election fraud or voting rights abuses.
Goodwin said his office will work with the U.S. Department of Justice Department to handle reports of election abuses related to the Nov. 6 general election.
"Every citizen must be able to vote without interference or discrimination and have that vote counted without it being stolen because of fraud," Goodwin said in his statement. "The Department of Justice will act promptly and aggressively to protect the integrity of the election process."
Federal law protects against crimes such as intimidating or bribing voters, buying and selling votes, altering vote tallies, stuffing ballot boxes and marking ballots for voters against their wishes or without their input, according to information from Goodwin.
