Man Shot On Wheeling Island Is Not Helping Police In Investigation

Posted: Updated:

A man is hospitalized after he was shot on Wheeling Island Monday night.

Police say the victim is not cooperating, but they are managing to investigate anyway.

Shots rang out on Vermont Street at about 10:11 p.m. Monday.

And a man had been shot through the side.

"Upon the officers' arrival, they found a young black male, the victim, Stephen Kyle, 21 years old, coming out of a house at 22 Vermont Street," said Deputy Chief Martin Kimball of the Wheeling Police Department. "He had been shot in the right side. Officers observed an entry and an exit wound and attempted to talk to Mr. Kyle , who was not very helpful in describing what happened."

Kimball says the woman who lives in the house told police she heard some frantic knocking at her door, and heard a voice saying, "This is your little brother. Let me in. I've been shot."

She said Kyle is not her "little brother," but she told police that he is a friend of the father of her baby, and that he is the baby's godfather.

Kimball says the woman allowed police into her house to investigate.

"We did find a 9 millimeter shell casing on the floor of the dining room," said Kimball. "A further search of the residence revealed a 9 millimeter pistol upstairs in a dresser that the resident claimed she owned. Our victim claims that the actual shooting took place outside on the street, however we're not sure that's true."

Kimball says Kyle has two addresses--one in Florida, one in Cleveland.

He says Kyle is being treated at Wheeling Hospital.
