Congress returns to Washington for big economic job

WASHINGTON, D.C. -

Lawmakers return to Washington Tuesday morning with a big task at hand.

Congress will begin working to make sure the nation does not reach the fiscal cliff at the end of the year.

The fiscal cliff is a series of tax increases and across the board spending cuts that many economists say could push the U.S. into another recession.

Both Democratic and Republican congressional leaders say they believe some kind of deal can be worked out before the end of the year.

The House and Senate have been in recess since September when the legislators took a break for the elections.
