The former Bellaire Water Department employee who pled guilty to embezzling money from the village accounts was sentenced Monday.
Monday in court, both the prosecution and defense agreed on the amount that Lisa Flaherty had reportedly taken as $18,952.
In accordance with a plea agreement between the two sides, Judge Jennifer Sargus sentenced her to 18 months behind bars.
Flaherty spoke out in court, and afterward the mayor spoke out in the courthouse corridor.
"I had a very good working relationship with the Village of Bellaire for six years. I made a horrible choice. You know, I disappointed my friends, my family. The people I work with. And the community that I work with," said Flaherty.
Bellaire Mayor Vince DiFabrizio said he feels justice was served.
Ohio Auditor of State Dave Yost commends Berhalter for what he calls "an effective and efficient prosecution."
Yost also says he's delighted that the court imposed prison time, because theft of public money is a serious offense.
