The West Virginia Board of Education fired State Superintendent Jorea Marple earlier this month, and the president of the board indicated that he wanted Randolph County Superintendent James Phares to replace her.
Phares reportedly planned to resign from his Randolph County job at Monday evening's Board of Education meeting, but he did not.
He did, however, release a statement saying that he was humbled to be considered for the position of state superintendent.
"Everybody thinks this all happens overnight, I realize that it doesn't," Phares said. "They'll go through and there will be a process sometime next week. They may have a meeting. If they do, and they ask me to present myself before the board, I shall do that. And then they will make a decision one way or the other."
The West Virginia Board of Education scheduled a special meeting Nov. 21. The president of the board said last week that he will recommend Phares for the state superintendent position at that meeting. However, the agenda was later changed again and the state superintendent position will not be discussed at the meeting. Instead, board members will discuss the findings of a recent audit of the state's schools and what needs to be addressed.
