WHEELING (AP) — Ohio County Magistrate Patty Murphy
says she properly handled a drunken driving case involving a relative
and another person.
Wheeling deputy police chief Martin Kimball tells media outlets that Murphy's actions were "highly irregular."
On
Nov. 10, Wheeling police cited the magistrate's cousin, John Marshall
High School principal Corey Murphy, with failure to produce a driver's
license. Police charged Marshall County special education director
Shelby Haines with DUI.
According to a police report, Corey Murphy
was released. The officers were taking Haines to the Northern Regional
Jail when the magistrate called and told them to return Haines to
Wheeling for arraignment.
The report says Murphy stopped Haines'
arraignment before it was complete. She says she completed the
arraignment and released Haines on a personal recognizance bond to Corey
Murphy's sister.
