Fire crews in Valley Grove were on the scene of an apartment fire for more than four hours Tuesday on Route 40 near West Point Products.

The fire broke out about 6:30 a.m. Flames could be seen shooting through the roof of the structure at around 8:00 a.m.

Firefighters were still on scene at about noon Tuesday.

Ohio County Emergency Management Director Lou Vargo said the fire started in the basement and spread quickly. Authorities said the nine people living in the apartment and are now homeless. Firefighters said the building is a total loss.

The American Red Cross is helping to find housing for at least one those families.

Donations are being accepted for each of these families at the Valley Grove Community Center on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sizes needed are 32 x 32 men's jeans and large shirts, 18 1/2 husky girls, 16 1/2 husky girls, girls shoes sizes 8 1/2 and 6 1/2, sports bras size 34, men's jeans 40 x 30 and xxl shirts.
