West Virginia school
systems have been left out of the running for the U.S. Department of
Education's latest round of Race to the Top funding.
The department on Monday named 61 district applicants from
across the country as finalists for nearly $400 million in federal grants.
By the end of the year as many as 25 winners will be awarded
grants for programs to personalize learning, raise student achievement, improve
teacher effectiveness, and ready students for college and careers.
The Charleston Daily Mail reports that of the 372 original
applications, eight came from West Virginia.
West Virginia
also lost out in 2010 when Race to the Top grants were awarded on a statewide
basis.
