No. 1-ranked West Liberty scorched the nets for 78 second-half points here Thursday night in rolling to a 139-71 thrashing of Ohio Valley University in West Virginia Conference action at the Snyder Activities Center.
Cedric Harris scored 22 points – all in the first half – to pace seven double-figure scorers for Coach Jim Crutchfield's veteran group as the Hilltoppers (6-0, 2-0) ran away from the Fighting Scots (1-4, 0-1).
A scrappy Ohio Valley squad gave a good account of itself in the first half, blocking 10 shots and keeping the deficit in single digits until the final three minutes of the period.
With Harris leading the way, West Liberty took a 61-48 lead into the locker room at halftime but that was it for the hosts as Alex Falk and Tim Hausfeld teamed up on a 12-0 run in the first 90 seconds of the second half and the rout was on.
The Hilltoppers hit the century mark on a Nick Brown 3-pointer with 11:20 remaining to go up 100-58 but they were far from finished. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Shawn Dyer pushed the margin past 50 points, 113-62, with more than 9 minutes to play and the visitors led by as many as 70 points coming down the stretch.
Dyer and Brown backed Harris with 18 and 17 points, respectively, while Falk and Chris Morrow finished with 14 points each. True freshman Seger Bonifant added a dozen points while redshirt freshman Bubby Goodwin made a nice run at a triple-double with 10 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists. C.J. Hester just missed a double-double with 9 points and 11 rebounds.
Jerry Macon and Neil Gingerich had 13 and 10 points, respectively, to top OVU.
West Liberty will be idle this weekend before returning to the court on Tuesday for a 7:30 p.m. game against West Virginia State at the ASRC.
