Hancock County Commissioners announced the purchase of the Newell Memorial Field and the Jimmy Carey Stadium in Weirton on Monday.
The Commissioners bought the two properties for $400,000 from the Hancock County Board of Education. Their goal is to attract perspective clients to these two properties including the old TS&T Factory.
"I think it's really important. The more spaces we have, the better we have the opportunity to do something with it and to let the community know we aren't going to do anything rash or irregular. We are going to make sure this is best for both communities before we do anything," says Hancock County Commissioner Dan Greathouse.
The process began back in October when the school board put both properties up for public auction. After a series of low bids from various bidders and postponing the auction multiple times, the school board finally voted 3 to 1 to accept the commissioners' offer.
Hancock County Commission will meet with the Business Development Corporation Wednesday to discuss what to do with the properties.
