
An inmate at the Belmont County Jail who was found hanging in his cell has died in a Pittsburgh hospital.
52-year-old James Chaplin of Jacobsburg was found alive by jail officers after an apparent suicide. He was immediately transferred to East Ohio Regional Hospital in Martins Ferry and then lifeflighted to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, where he later died.
Chaplin had been charged with two counts of rape, one count of gross sexual imposition and two counts of corrupting another with drugs. Officials say the alleged incidents occurred last December.
