WHEELING, W.Va -

Construction continues where the old GC Murphy building once stood. It was demolished earlier this year with other buildings that had stood vacant for some time on the 1100 hundred block in Wheeling.

While the final building is in the process of being torn down, Mayor Andy McKenzie is sharing his hopes for the future of the property. Mayor McKenzie says the city plans to have demolition finished and grass planted on the block by the end of this month.

"Next year we'll start doing some design work," he says. "Then is the opportunity to start renting it out, and leasing it. The real hope is that eventually you'll see new construction on that. The big hope would probably be residential because that is now our biggest problem here in the Wheeling area."

Mayor McKenzie also says the space has potential for multi-use, whether the it's used for office space, retail or residential buildings in the future.
