West Liberty student-athlete facing Murder Charges in Miami Dade, Fla.

WEST LIBERTY W.Va. -

A student-athlete has been arrested in a West Liberty University dorm Friday on Fugitive from Justice charges in West Virginia.  

The Mountain State Fugitive Task Force and the West Liberty Police Department arrested Vernon Cedric Dunnom, 24, of Pittsburg, Ca., who is facing charges of first degree homicide, attempted homicide, and two counts of robbery from an alleged incident that occurred on Nov 17, 2012 in Miami Dade, Fla. according to authorities. 

Ohio County Magistrate Joe Roxby said Dunnom is charged with being a fugitive from justice in the state of West Virginia.

Authorities say Dunnom was arrested at the Beta Dorm. According to Chad Simpson of the MSFTF, Dunnom is a student of the university and a member of the football team.

According to the West Liberty University website, Dunnom is a junior defensive-end for the Hilltoppers football team. WLU spokesperson Maureen Zambito released a statement regarding the incident.

"West Liberty University has and shall continue to respect the federally protected rights of its students. In addition, we shall continue to investigate credible allegations involving our students and take appropriate action," she said.

Dunnom will be transported to the Northern Regional Jail to await extradition to Florida.
