The West Virginia Northern Regional Highway Safety Office is joining an effort to cut down on drunk driving this holiday season.

The 2012 Holiday Blitz is a nationwide "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign to stop impaired drivers and save lives.

Drivers will see more DUI checkpoints and more officers will be out on the roads looking for impaired drivers.

The crackdown will run through January 1.

Officers from Hancock County to Tyler County will be working extra patrols funded by the Governor's Highway Safety Program.

Highway Safety Coordinator Neil Fowkes of the Wheeling Police Department said 17 impaired drivers were arrested during the blitz in previous years.
