HUNTINGTON (AP) — Huntington Police Chief Skip Holbrook says the police officer who fatally shot an Alabama tractor-trailer driver acted heroically to save the life of a local security guard.

A preliminary investigation shows Stephen Fitz fired four gunshots in killing 32-year-old Joshua Emerson of Hamilton, Ala.

Holbrook said Emerson allegedly attempted to attack the security guard with a knife shortly before 1 a.m. Saturday.

Fitz was on routine patrol when he went to investigate a collision between a tractor trailer and a small car.

Holbrook told The Herald-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/TqFYOZ) that Fitz then spotted Emerson acting aggressive and confrontational toward the guard and attempted to intervene.

Fitz is on paid administrative leave while the shooting is investigated. He was sworn into the force in May 2007 and has 18 years of military service.
