A chill in the air doesn't stop the fitness enthusiasts at Kanawha State Forest near Charleston.

Winter events include the First Day Hike on Jan. 1. Designed to promote good health and exercise on a year round basis, these are led hikes through the park. For information, contact 304-558-3500.

For those who are looking for more of a challenge, the Frozen Sasquatch 25K & 50K Run is scheduled Jan. 5. The West Virginia Mountain Trail Runners host these winter long distance runs.  For details, call Mike Dolin at 304-415-4104.

Later in January, the Shirley Schweizer Winter Walk is an educational hike to explore the wintry forest. The walk is scheduled for Jan. 26. This interpretative hike is designed to enlighten and educate attendees about what to find in the forest in winter months. The event is sponsored by the Kanawha State Forest Foundation.
