Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., has officially joined some of his colleagues from the U.S. Senate in a call for a bipartisan commission on violence.

Manchin, a pro-gun, lifetime member of the National Rifle Association, joined Sens. Joe Lieberman, I-Conn., John McCain, R-Ariz., and Susan Collins, R-Maine, in sending a letter to Vice President Joe Biden urging that when he submits the conclusions of his task force on gun violence to President Barack Obama and Congress in January that he recommend the establishment of a National Commission on Violence. The senators also submitted a draft bill describing their proposal for the commission.

Manchin made headlines earlier this month following the school shooting in Newtown, Conn. Manchin called for a national conversation on gun violence and joined Lieberman in calling for a national commission on violence. According to the letter, some of the senators called for a similar commission on violence following the April 1999 massacre at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colo.

"We believe that the root causes of this violence are complex and that responding to and preventing it will require a comprehensive approach that leaves no stone unturned," the senators wrote.
