The rail-truck cargo transfer facility under development in
northern Wayne County
has a formal name: the Heartland Intermodal Gateway at Prichard.
The West Virginia Public Port Authority recently approved
the name, according to a news release issued Jan. 15 by the Rahall
Transportation Institute at Marshall University.
The name was selected from three that a group of stakeholders in the project chose
in September.
A ground breaking is expected this year, according to the
RTI news release. A 16- to 18-month construction cycle is estimated for site
preparation and terminal construction as well as industrial road and bridge
construction over the Heartland Corridor into the terminal site.
The intermodal facility will allow container cargo to be transferred between Norfolk Southern trains on the railroad's Heartland Corridor from Norfolk to Chicago.
