CHARLESTON (AP) — Berkeley County resident Tina H. Combs has been appointed to the state Board of Education.

Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin announced Combs' appointment Jan. 18.

Combs will replace Jenny Phillips. Phillips and board member Priscilla Haden resigned last month over the handling of Jorea Marple's abrupt firing as state schools superintendent. Phillips and Haden had voted against Marple's firing.

According to a release from Tomblin's office, Combs has served as president and CEO of the Martinsburg-Berkeley County Chamber of Commerce. She's a past chairwoman of Blue Ridge Community and Technical College Board of Governors and served as treasurer of the Berkeley County Business Education Partnership.

Combs earned a bachelor's degree in organizational leadership and development from Mountain State University.
