Wind Chill Advisory Still in Effect for Area, Chill May Feel Like 20 Below Zero

Posted: Updated:

A wind chill advisory is in effect for the entire WTRF viewing area with the exception of Tyler County in West Virginia. The advisory went into effect at 10 p.m. Monday night and ends at 11 a.m. on Wednesday.

The wind chill value will reach 10-20 below zero Monday night through Tuesday morning, and 10-20 below zero again on Tuesday night through Wednesday morning.

Wind gusts may reach 30 miles-per-hour.

A host of health problems can occur with this type of weather, just as heat waves kill people, so does extreme cold weather.

The extreme windy conditions tonight will amplify the effects to the human body. Frostbite can occur in a matter of just a few short minutes.

It is recommended that anyone planning to travel overnight should have a winter preparedness kit. This would consist of a cell phone or two-way radio, a heavy blanket and extra coats, an empty soup can with a candle in it can also provide heat until authorities can arrive should one become stranded.

Also, the cold temperatures mean your pipes could be in danger of freezing.

Here's three easy tips to help protect them:
Open cabinet doors to allow heat to get to piping under sinks and vanities near exterior walls.
Keep your thermostat set at the same temperature during both day and night.
Run a small trickle of water at vulnerable faucets.
