Union membership in West Virginia declined last years as the number of people working in the state increased, according to the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Union members were about 12.1 percent of the state's employed work force compared to the national average of 11.3 percent. According to the BLS, 91,000 of the state's 697,000 employed people belonged to a union. Including people represented by a union but not belonging to one, the state's rate increased to 13.1 percent.
Among neighboring states, Pennsylvania had the highest membership rate at 13.5 and Virginia the lowest at 4.4. Other states' rates were Ohio, 12.6; Maryland, 10.6; and Kentucky, 10 percent.
